CASE STUDIES

Duck Habitat Project

SOUTHWESTERN CLASSICAL ACADEMY
FLINT, MICHIGAN

PROJECT SUMMARY

Southwestern Classical Academy is an urban middle/high school located on the south side of Flint, Michigan. Several years ago, the school became the unexpected spring home of migrating mallards looking for a place to raise their young. Concerned about the lack of food and water in the school’s four courtyards, the students decided to create a rain garden-like vernal pool habitat in nearby Cronin Derby Downs to give the ducks a better and safer place to lay their eggs.

This project was supported by Discovering PLACE, one of nine regional hubs that comprise the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative.

“PBSE takes some trial and error, but you get better each time. Start small and allow your project to grow over time.”
