CASE STUDIES

Connecting our Great Lakes

AU GRES-SIMS SCHOOL
AU GRES, MICHIGAN

PROJECT SUMMARY

Au Gres-Sims Elementary School is located in Au Gres, Michigan, a small, riverfront community near Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay. During the 2014–15 school year, fourth- and fifth-grade students worked with teachers, local experts, and community partners to evaluate the health of the Au Gres River. The goal was to help students better understand the importance of the watershed, learn more about the factors that affect water quality, and use what they learned to raise public awareness.

This project was supported by the Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative, one of nine regional hubs that comprise the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative.

“PBE has been a difference-maker for us. We have been able to leverage all of our great and abundant resources here within the Saginaw Bay Watershed in order to provide enriching and applicable education experiences for students of Au Gres-Sims.”

Superintendent of Au Gres-Sims School District
