A Carbon-neutral Graduation

CITY HIGH / MIDDLE SCHOOL
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN

PROJECT SUMMARY

City High School is in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is located on the banks of the Grand River. After hearing from a local entrepreneur about the waste generated by schools and communities at traditional graduation ceremonies, City’s senior class dedicated the 2014–15 school year to planning and carrying out a carbon-neutral graduation.

This project was supported by Groundswell, one of nine regional hubs that comprise the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative.

“Place-based education is one of the most important things we can offer our students. It allows our kids the opportunity to get out and see that all these things we discuss are actually happening in their community and that they can use what they’ve learned to do something about it.”
