Water is Life

This institute examines how the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) protects Nibi (water) through independent Water Quality Standards (WQS). Participants will explore the distinction between KBIC and Michigan standards under “Treatment as a State” authority.

Standard Focus: Social Studies & ELA
Connect with water through storytelling, song, and deep listening. This day focuses on KBIC Treaty Reserved Rights, the collaborative policy-making behind KBIC WQS, and the essential role of multi-stakeholder stewardship in protecting water for future generations.
June 17 | Threats, Challenge, & Kinship
Focus: Science & ELA
Bridge traditional teachings with hands-on science through water quality sampling and monitoring. Identify watershed threats to Manoomin (wild rice), culture, the economy and health while collaboratively developing solutions and personal actions for water stewardship.

Incentives:
- Up to 6 SCECHs per day
- Lunches provided
- Stipend of $100/day for up to 10 K-12 teachers
- Travel stipends available for teachers traveling 50+ miles
Specific details about where to meet and other information will be sent out closer to the event. Both days will take place on the KBIC L’Anse Reservation. Join for both days, or opt to attend one day.
