As the Keweenaw evolves from an industrial past to a quality-of-life economy, the Keweenaw Heartlands project is providing opportunities for community-led conservation and locally-driven stewardship. This institute explores how our community is working together to protect the landscape that defines our region.

July 7 | Keweenaw Heartlands: Shared Values
Standard Focus: Social Studies & ELA

Learn how community-led conservation fosters collaboration through value-based decision-making navigating both challenges and successes. Engage in a restoration simulation to identify how communities work together to solve complex issues and balance competing interests. Explore how primary resources support objective decision-making for long range land use and transformation with practical applications to the classroom.

July 8 | Conservation & Habitat Protection
Focus: Science & ELA

Explore the vital role of community partnerships in protecting local ecosystem habitat. Learn how to collect data and inspire stewardship through hands-on training tools and apps that can be used in the classroom. Work in grade-level groups to create habitat stewardship projects that support student advocacy.As the Keweenaw evolves from an industrial past to a quality-of-life economy, the Keweenaw Heartlands project is providing opportunities for community-led conservation and locally-driven stewardship. Incentives:

  • Up to 6 SCECHs per day
  • Lunches provided
  • Stipend of $100/day for up to 10 K-12 teachers
  • Travel stipends available for teachers traveling 50+ miles
