2026 Lake Huron Place-Based Stewardship Education Summer Institute

July 21July 23

During this 2.5-day workshop, participants will learn the foundational elements of place-based stewardship education (PBSE) and how to implement a PBSE project with their students.  This year we will also be focusing on fisheries science and watershed exploration with lessons and activities that will support those topics. Teacher participants will explore different place-based education and Great Lakes literacy-focused lessons and be “students” as lessons are modelled at various field locations. Each participant will be able to connect with relevant community partners and receive coaching and time to plan their place-based stewardship education project.

If you are not familiar with place-based stewardship education, learn more here: http://www.nemiglsi.org.

Educators from the same school who apply in teams will be given greater consideration, particularly teams bringing on educators that are new to place-based stewardship education. See questions 14 and 15 about team participation. We recognize that administrator support is vital to make PBSE projects a sustained reality. In the application we will ask for administrator contact info and will be sending them an invite to join us for a portion of the Institute on day 2 to share more about the PBSE process with them.

APPLY by May 22, 2026, to attend.

State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) and a $500 project stipend from the Center for Great Lakes Literacy will be available to educators who complete the Summer Institute.
